We often pass the time nattering about the telecoms industry and the foolish mistakes it is making, but one thing Rob said really caught my ear. "What gets me," he said, "and what really brings it home, is that these networks are not purely about the end possible speed. It is about how spread that | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The subject of this blog is a briefing this week with Scale Computing. And a major factor in why it's getting written about here is the laughable levels of chutzpah involved on Scale's part. The occasion for the conversation was Scale Computing's re-launch of its HC3 "datacentre in a box", which is a converged storage stack, that comprises server, storage and virtualisation hypervisor in one device. The HC3 comes in 1U nodes each holding four 3.5" SAS or SATA drives. You can have a minimum of three nodes and up to eight, which will serve about 100 VMs. I say | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | There are only a few weeks left to enter the 2013 FDM everywoman in Technology Awards. The awards are designed to recognise the achievements of women working within the technology sector, so if you feel you deserve recognition or you know a female that you think deserves a pat on the back, for all her hard work, then here's your chance. Hosted by everywoman, in association with womenintechnology.co.uk and sponsored by FDM Group, the awards will be presented at a ceremony at The Savoy on 19 March 2013. Entry for the awards is free and there are seven categories to | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Earlier news that General Motors (GM) was bringing its IT in house and in the process looking to hire 10,000 IT professionals is gathering pace as 3000 HP workers join GM's ranks. These are staff already working on GM IT projects but are employed by HP.GM outsourced almost all it's IT to HP via a previous agreement with EDS, which HP acquired.I bet there are 3000 very happy people there. Morale at HP's services division, which was created after it acquired EDS, is low following lots of redundancies.GM announced this yesterday. Just this week the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) issued a monetary penalty of £120,000 for losing an unencrypted non password protect USB memory stick containing sensitive personal data. Have UK data handling organisations learned nothing in the past five years? "We are seeing the same pattern we did in the run up to the HMRC data breach in 2007," says Stewart Room, partner at international legal firm Field | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | According to Duracell, one third of discarded alkaline batteries away could still have 67% of usable power left inside. East London designer Dave Cranmer, created a 6ft 3inch Duracell Bunny light sculpture out of 1,500 recycled batteries and 45 reclaimed battery operated devices such as TV remotes, clocks and toys. The Bunny weighs an impressive 56kg and is made out of 147m of steel rod. The sculpture, illuminated by 700 coloured LEDs, connect by half a kilometre of wire, was created to demonstrate that batteries which people think are 'dead' still have a fair bit of power left inside.Check out the video of how | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Next week is Get Safe On-line Week and I have been busy trying to persuade those who are serious about protecting their organisations, their staff, their customers and the families of their staff and customers to get involved. I am, however, struck by how many pay lip service to the need for "awareness" but are unwilling to link to practical advice on on-line safety and incident reporting form their own websites. The reasons vary but I am struck by those in the public sector where there is also a srong reluctance to admit to the scale, nature, causes and consequences of fraud and impersonation and the value of | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | As power politics takes a back seat these days there seems to be a lot of unused spy equipment lying around. So SpyGadgets4U is flogging them as a way for happy families to capture those happy moments in life. You know by having a secret camera in your clothing you can really catch people in natural moods.I can see the TV show You've Been framed getting lots of Material. "Happy anniversary darling," says husband presenting his wife with flowers while capturing the moment on camera. "**** off I am leaving you." | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Downtime was contacted earlier this week by someone representing a Chinese printer company, that will now be selling in the UK.After Huawei was found dodgy by White House security review, one wonders what the spooks will make of the new laser printer. Maybe it posts a copy of every page printed back to China via snail mail. | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
